Complaint made after Ireland AM guest makes risqué joke

Popular Virgin Media show Ireland AM segment faced a strange complaint after a guest asked one of the presenters if he "liked a sugary rim".

The segment in question took place back in April and featured a mixologist taking the panel through how to make their own cocktails.

As is often the case, the cocktail in question required a bit of sugar on the edge of the glass it was being poured into.

That lead the mixologist to ask one of the hosts if he "liked a sugary rim".

Naturally, the double entendre was picked up on, causing the host to giggle.

And one viewer was so angered by the conversation between the pair, they wrote to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).

The complaint, released earlier on Wednesday, read: "The complainant states that while tasting cocktails, the guest asked the presenter if he liked a 'sugary rim'. The complainant contends the guest said this several times and the presenter thought it was hilarious. The complainant found the language and innuendo offensive and inappropriate for broadcast."

Virgin Media responded to the complaint, saying that the audience would've been expecting some innuendo or playful banter due to the nature of the segment.

The BAI ruled: "The Forum noted the programme is aimed at an adult audience, is broadcast at a time when children are normally at school and is broadcast on a channel aimed at an adult audience.

"The Forum was of the view the segment was in keeping with the nature and style of this programme, which deals with adult-oriented matters and can take a light-hearted approach to lifestyle items."

It subsequently rejected the complaint for those reasons.
