Complaint follows councillor's remarks

An official complaint has been lodged to Cardiff Council following personal remarks made in last week's full council meeting.

Parliamentary candidate for Cardiff Central, Jenny Rathbone, said the comments made by the executive member for education and schools Freda Salway were unfounded and gave her 'no right of reply.'

The comments came after Rathbone put forward a question to the executive regarding junk food in schools vending machines. Read our report from the meeting here.

Rathbone has said she will still campaign for the removal of sugary drinks, sweets and crisps from secondary school vending machines.

In a release following her complaint, Rathbone said:

"Salway made some personal remarks about me which were wholly inaccurate, in the full knowledge that I would not have the right of reply.

"I am pleased that the Lord Mayor intervened and insisted on a full apology, but disappointed Councillor Salway did this ungraciously and only at the third time of asking. Councillor Salway's behaviour discourages members of the public to take their council seriously and engage in local concerns."
