Compass serves meals in schools, offices and hospitals
(Picture: Compass)Catering giant Compass Group has said it intends to use more plant-based products and only use electric vehicles, as it outlined a goal for becoming climate net zero by 2050.
Dominic Blakemore, chief executive of the FTSE 100 firm which provides meals in schools, offices and football stadiums, said: "Given the complexity of the global food supply chain as it is today, we do not underestimate the scale of the challenge ahead of us.”
He added: “Radical new collaborations are urgently needed across the entire value chain to make it a reality.”
Compass operates in 45 countries and serves over 5.5 billion meals a year.
Its commitment to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions across the firm’s global operations and supply chain will be helped by a raft of initiatives.
As well as reformulating menus to be low carbon and switch towards more plant-based proteins, Compass will also aim to slash food waste by 50% by 2030, and move to further reduce single-use plastic.
The pledges come ahead of the COP26 climate conference which starts on October 31 in Glasgow.
