Company recalls 44,550 pounds of product over listeria concern

  • Bornstein Seafoods Inc. has issued a recall of 44,550 pounds of its Cooked & Peeled Ready-To-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat due to potential listeria contamination.
  • The move was announced by the FDA after routine sampling. Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause invasive and intestinal illnesses was the specific bug found.
  • The affected shrimp was sold in either one-pound or five-pound bags and distributed to retailers in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada.
  • Listeria infection is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S.
  • This recall coincides with P. East Trading Corp.'s recall of Salted Smoked Split Herring due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum.
