If you're a key worker in Edinburgh you can claim a free bike from this kind-hearted company

A company have launched a scheme giving away free "hero bikes" to key workers in Edinburgh during the coronavirus outbreak.

The Bike Station, based in Causewayside, repair and upcycle old bikes, as well as offering classes on how to fix your own bike.

The company are also invested in the community, working with youth groups and offering opportunities for Scottish inmates to work on donated bikes to develop skills.

Now, they are helping essential workers in the capital, including supermarket workers and those in the childcare sector, get to their workplace.

Supported by the likes of Transport Scotland, Edinburgh City Council and Spokes, the "hero bike scheme" offers workers a free recycled bike, as well as a helmet, lock and lights.

The Bike Station said: "Hero Bikes has been set up by The Bike Station to support key workers in need in Perth and Edinburgh with affordable independent transport and means to look after their own health and well-being."

How it works?

If you're a key worker living in Edinburgh over the age of 16, you can complete an application - which takes no more than ten minutes.

They say that applicants must send them a scan or photo of proof of your employment or voluntary work - this can be an ID card, most recent payslip, letter from your employer or similar - by email to heroedinburgh@thebikestation.org.uk

The scheme is set to runs for an initial six months, with participants able to decide whether they wish to the bike or donate it back to The Bike Station.
