Commuters urged to avoid M62 after two serious incidents cause 10-mile tailback

Drivers have been urged to avoid the M62 after two serious incidents closed the motorway in both directions this morning - with 10 miles of tailbacks.

The major commuter route has been sealed off junctions 22 to 25 following a police incident and a serious collision.

Officers have been in the Scammonden Bridge area since 5am this morning after a man was sighted on a bridge.

The male fell from the bridge at just after 6am, suffering life threatening injuries.

In an unrelated incident, emergency services were called to the exit slip road of the M62 eastbound at junction 24 just after 1am this morning following a serious collision between a motorcyclist and a vehicle.

Police have closed the motorway between junction 23, near Huddersfield, to junction 22, for Rishworth Moor.

Highways England have advised road users that the M62 will remain closed in both directions around Huddersfield during Wednesday's peak morning period.

The closure is causing delays back to Greater Manchester, with tailbacks up to junction 25, for Brighouse, heading Westbound and junction 21, for Milnrow, heading Eastbound.

Traffic is also heavy on routes through Newhey, Denshaw and Rishworth.

Bus routes in Manchester including the 83 and 350 have been delayed due to building traffic on Huddersfield Road in Oldham.

Accident investigation work is now taking place.

Traffic is being diverted and drivers are being advised to avoid the area if possible.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: “Following an earlier incident, the motorway is closed between junctions 22 and 24 in both directions.

“Drivers heading eastbound are currently being diverted to exit at junction 22, take the A672, then the A58 to re-join the M62 at junction 26.

"Drivers heading westbound are currently being diverted to exit at junction 24, take the A629, then the A643, then the A58, and finally the A672 to re-join the M62 at junction 22.

"Highways England is advising road users in the North of England that the M62 will remain closed in both directions around Huddersfield through this morning’s peak period (Wednesday 8 May).

“Following an earlier incident, the motorway is closed between junctions 22 and 24 in both directions.

“Drivers heading eastbound are currently being diverted to exit at junction 22, take the A672, then the A58 to re-join the M62 at junction 26.

"Drivers heading westbound are currently being diverted to exit at junction 24, take the A629, then the A643, then the A58, and finally the A672 to re-join the M62 at junction 22.”

Motorists are urged to follow updates on local radio and on West Yorkshire Police and Highways Agency social media.
