Commuters have been hit by rush-hour delays after a fire near the tracks at Romiley station.
A blaze broke out close to the tracks shortly before 5.15pm this evening, the fire service said.
Rail staff were scrambled and one fire engine from Hyde attended.
Services were halted and the electrics isolated so firefighters could go down onto the tracks to tackle it.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue spokesman said it appeared to have been caused by leaves had gathered inside a signal box which had then caught light.
Dry powder which is used to tackle electrical fires was placed over it but once the box was removed it appeared it had already burn itself out, the spokesman added.
