Commuters face weeks of travel disruption amid major sewer repairs

Drivers are facing weeks of travel disruption as work to renovate sewers in a busy Somerset village gets underway. Road closures and temporary traffic lights will be in place across Backwell throughout March while Wessex Water carries out work to repair sewers in the village.

Work began this week and is likely to take until the end of the month to complete, with activity on-site on restricted to weekdays from 7.00 am and 11.00 pm, reports Somerset Live.

A complete closure is now active at Cherry Road from the junction of Orchard Road to Ivy Close and is expected to be in force until March 24.

Temporary traffic signals will also be put in place along Station Road - a busy route from Nailsea to the A370 - from Monday (March 13). The signals will be in place from 52 Station Road to the junction of Moor Lane.

There will be a full road closure across the junction of Waverly Road. The work on Station Road is expected to be completed by March 31.

A section of Rock Avenue will also close from March 27-March 31 for work to take place. Diversions will be put in place.

A spokesman for Wessex Water said: “Most of the repairs will be carried out using no-dig techniques, which are quicker and less intrusive than replacing the pipe in a conventional manner.

“Access will be maintained for residents, but it may be delayed at times.”

And roadworks to build a new bus lane have started today (March 13) on Long Ashton Bypass. Workers will remain onsite for four weeks. The bus lane will go towards Bristol and will see lanes for cars reduced to one lane in each direction, replacing the currently high occupancy lane on the bypass through to the Gurney roundabout.
