Community spirit saves the day ...and a few cars too

A Paisley driver has lauded kind Buddies who stopped her from crashing into a row of parked cars in the snow.

Lesley McKirdy was driving on Charlotte Place when her car skidded and came to a standstill inches from other cars parked along the pavement.

The Paisley estate agent knew if she tried to move she was going crash head on into more than one vehicle.

But thoughtful locals who could see the drama unfold from their windows quickly rushed to help the stricken 39-year-old, who was on her way to value a property.

Neighbours Laura Bryers, Donna and Alan rushed out with snow shovels, spades and grit to create a path to safety.

Explaining she had managed to drive up the snowy hill, Lesley said it was a different story when she tried to drive back down.

“As the road had parked cars at each side, the easiest way was to slowly reverse down, but it wasn’t quite that easy,” she said.

“My car wasn’t going in that direction. I stopped the car and put the handbrake on, but my car kept sliding and eventually stopped not far from the parked cars.

“I felt sick, helpless and close to tears.

“I didn’t know what to do as I knew if I tried to pull away from the parked cars it would just slide into them.

“Then a lovely woman tapped my window and said she had seen me from her window and knew I would be feeling sick with worry.

“She said she had snow shovels and grit and would help me get out safely. Then another two neighbours came to the rescue.”

The team of helpers were so efficient they had Lesley, who works for Purple Bricks in the town, back on the road for her next appointment at 10.30am.

She went back to thank all three of them later that day - parking a little further down the street.

Laura Bryers, who first spotted Lesley in difficulty, said she would never see anyone left stranded.

She said: “We have had a few scary moments coming down the hill before, so we know what it’s like.

“As soon as I went to the window I could see she was terrified.

“It really wasn’t a big deal. I just thought I better help and two other neighbours came out. It’s just what you do.

“I wouldn’t see anyone stuck like that.”

Insisting she couldn’t thank them enough, Lesley added: “Their kindness really meant a lot to me.

“I was truly taken aback with the community spirit of these three people.”

“They mucked together to get me back on the road.”
