Community Soup Kitchen launch urgent appeal for donations

The Sunderland charity's shelves are becoming empty with volunteers beginning to worry that they will struggle to feed those in need.

As hundreds of people across the North East are starting to bulk buy in response to the Corona crisis, Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen needs your help.

The charity that provides food to thousands of vulnerable people in Sunderland seven nights a week has launched an urgent appeal for non-perishable food items to help them continue to feed those who are struggling.

From Wednesday March 18th, the charity is opening its factory units’ doors on Addison Street to take in much-needed donations.

From pasta and rice to tinned goods, the community kitchen is in urgent need of food that has a long shelf life.

Founder, Andrea Bell, urges people in the Wearside community to help her team of volunteers by providing them with donations so they can continue to work to feed those who are in need.

She said: "Due to the panic of Coronavirus our shelves are running low so we have to appeal for non-perishable food donations.

"The people we help struggle every day, and if the schools are closed we are worried about the number of kids in the area who won’t get fed. This is having a massive impact on donations.

"We urge people to help us stock back up our shelves in preparation for the coming weeks so our food supplies will not run out. We think it's now time to get prepared."

The kitchen, based in Emmanuel Church, will be open every day from 2 pm to 7 pm to accept donations.

And the food warehouse will be open 5pm - 6pm from Wednesday 18th to Saturday 21st March.
