Community rally round to answer Lanarkshire foodbank's urgent plea for help

A plea from an East Kilbride foodbank after shelves ran bare saw the community rally to help.

Loaves and Fishes issued an urgent appeal for help as stocks were almost depleted.

And the local community answered the call, with numerous local schools donating bags of items as well as local churches.

The lifeline charity recently saw a new committee and chairman put in place after stalwarts Denis and Cathie Curran stepped down after nearly 30 years.

New chairman, Dominic Everett, called for the tremendous support given to Denis and Cathie to continue, with more people than ever needing the charity's help.

A post from Loaves and Fishes stated: "As some of you may know we are having issues with food supply and donations just now. Our shelves are empty and we are struggling to fill our parcels.

“As Harvest time approaches, could we politely ask you to think of us?

“If your schools, groups and churches would like us to visit and talk, or we can send you a video if visitors aren’t possible."

The shelves have now been restocked - although the charity continues to need ongoing support and donations.

New chairman, Dominic, told Lanarkshire Live : "When we reach out for help like this, it is when we genuinely need it.

"The response was tremendous. Our shelves have gone from empty to full and we can't thank everyone enough.

"Schools, churches and communities have rallied round in the most amazing way. We worked seven days straight sorting food, putting it away and sending it straight back out to our families.

"Loaves and Fishes will always be here to help anyone in East Kilbride when they needs us. This last week has proved that East Kilbride will always be there for us when we need you. Our hearts are full."

Dominic has reiterated how important community support is - especially as Christmas approaches.

"Local businesses, churches and schools and individuals who have previously donated, we still need their help in terms of charitable donations, especially in the run up to Christmas," he added.

“Demand is only going to grow in the short to medium term for various reasons including COVID and cuts to Universal Credit."

During last year’s Christmas period, almost 300 food parcels were distributed by the foodbank with over 200 toy and toiletries parcels also prepared and collected.

This was 150 more than the previous year. And at the same time, the foodbank handed out 85-90 emergency parcels a day.

Donations can be dropped in to the foodbank from Tuesday to Friday, 10am to noon at 40 Singer Road, Kelvin Industrial Estate.

There are also various supermarket drop-off points: Sainsbury’s, East Kilbride, town centre; Morrisons, Lindsayfield; Co-Op, The Village; Sainsbury’s, Strathaven; Calderwood Fresh and Press; and Paragon Wheels, College Milton.
