Community rallies together to raise money to rebuild 'book box' that was torched by vandals

Hundreds of pounds have been donated by generous locals to rebuild a community book box that was destroyed by vandals.

Friends of Maxwell Park in Pollokshields were left devastated after a handmade wooden box created to encourage residents to exchange books and read more was set alight.

Mindless vandals torched the box and the books inside over the weekend.

The community group were unsure whether to rebuild or remove the structure, which has been a feature of the park since October, but locals were quick to call for it be given a new lease of life.

A fundraising page set up to create a new one has now been inundated with donations totalling over £700.

Messages of support for the project were sent by members of the community.

Catherine Todd described the book box as "a wonderful resource particularly given current circumstances", while Wendy Niblock said the "wee library always gives me pleasure whenever I walk by it in the park. What a shame that someone had to ruin it".

Friend of Maxwell Park have thanked residents for their generosity and are currently working on "re-imagining" the book box.
