Community-owned Scottish island calls for new residents with farm lease

A COMMUNITY-OWNED Scottish island has put out a call for new residents with a croft up for lease.

The Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust, which manages the assets of the small island off the Kintyre peninsula, is advertising for applicants to fill a three-bed farmhouse which has become available.

The Achavinish Farmhouse also comes with outbuildings and some 27 acres of agricultural land.

Advertising the lease opportunity, the heritage trust said: “Achavinish Farmhouse and land has been in community ownership since the buy-out in 2002.

“The majority of land and properties within the trust’s ownership are leased in order to enable individuals and businesses the opportunity to create their own rural lifestyle, whilst enhancing the use of a community asset.

“The Isle of Gigha is situated three miles west of the Kintyre peninsula, less than three hours’ drive from the city of Glasgow.

“Gigha is serviced by hourly CalMac 20-minute sailings and has some of the most beautiful and tranquil surroundings in the west coast of Scotland.”

The trust said that viewings and a full marketing pack are available on request, and that applications will close at 5pm on Monday, September 30.

Gigha has been community owned since a buy-out in 2002, and has seen its population begin to climb as a result.

In 2021, it was used as the setting for the Channel 4 reality TV show “Murder Island”.

And in 2023, Gigha hit the headlines after reports that a meteorite had been seen to land on the island, reportedly starting a fire.
