Community left 'heartbroken' after death of 'loved and respected' Irish football captain

Tributes have been pouring in after the death of a popular Irish football captain.

Liam Egan from Ferns in Co Wexford passed away on Sunday.

And Liam's local team Enniscorthy United paid a touching tribute to their captain, who they said was "respected and loved" by all of his teammates.

They wrote on Facebook: "As a Club we are heartbroken, all our thoughts are with Liam's immediate family Lillian, Anthony and Saoirse and his wider extended family and friends.

"There's a reason he was our Captain, he was admired, respected and loved by his teammates and all of us lucky enough to spend our Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays with him.

"We'll carry him with us always.

"Rest easy Liam."

While one local added; "Condolences to his living family his friends and all his team mates we are all heartbroken for you all he was a young gentleman with a big heart and a great smile."

And Liam's family have confirmed his funeral arrangements will be shared at a later date.

A post on RIP.ie reads: "Loving son of Lillian O'Brien and Anthony Egan, and adored brother of Saoirse. Sadly missed by Nanna Egan, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, and a great circle of friends who were like family to him.

"Forever loved and forever missed, always in our hearts.

"Rest in Peace."
