Community left devastated after death of young dad and talented GAA player

Tributes are pouring in for a young dad who sadly passed away in Co Louth yesterday.

Seán Maguire died in hospital following his battle with cancer.

Seán, from Dundalk in Co Louth, is remembered as "a wonderful father" and "loving partner", with several local sports teams paying tribute following his tragic death.

Sean O'Mahonys GAA club said he was a former player with the club, coming through their underage structure.

The club added that Seán "was held in the highest regard by all the coaches who he played for".

Quay Celtic FC, where Seán grew up playing at underage level, said he was "loved by all his teammates and well respected by all club members".

"All of us at Quay Celtic F.C would like to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Seán. May he rest in peace," they said.

Another football team, Glenmuir FC, also paid tribute to the young man.

"Everyone in Glenmuir who had the pleasure of coaching and playing with Seán will remember him fondly," they said.

"Our sincerest condolences go out to Jackie, Elaine, Karen and Eddie; Seán's immediate family; as well as Seán's wider family and many friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam."

His pals have also been expressing their condolences to his family, as well as paying tribute to the highly-regarded man.

One friend said: "A full life ahead of you Seán, I’ll never forget your kindness and sweet heart. I couldn’t be more heartbroken for your poor family."

Others described him as "one of the kindest souls" who was "absolutely loved" by everyone.

Fianna Fail Councillor for Dundalk-Carlingford Seán Kelly also expressed his sadness at the news.

He said the Maguire family are highly respected and liked in Dundalk, and while he didn't know Seán personally, he is aware people can't speak highly enough of him.

"He was an absolute gentleman to his fingertips, so easy to get along with, so easy going," Councillor Kelly said.

"He was completely devoted to his family and friends so it's a very sad occasion."

A post on RIP.ie said Seán Maguire died "peacefully surrounded by his heartbroken family in the kind and gentle care of the staff of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda".

"Seán, a wonderful father to Jake and loving partner to Clara, he will be forever missed by his heartbroken family, his parents Elaine and Jackie, sister Karen and brother Eddie.

"Seán will be sadly missed and remembered with everlasting love by his son, partner, parents, sister, brother, niece Rosie, nanny Madge, uncles, aunts, cousins, his large circle of very close friends and great neighbours and by all who knew and loved him."

His funeral cortege will leave his family home on Friday morning before arriving for Mass in St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church.
