Community in mourning following passing of Louth County Councillor Oliver Tully

Tributes have been paid following the passing of a Louth County Councillor.

Dad-of-four Oliver Tully's death has been described as a "huge loss" to the Drogheda area.

The Fine Gael man, who was first elected in 1991, was appointed as Leas-Cathaoirleach of the council after the local elections in May.

Fergus O'Dowd TD told LMFM: "He was a very hardworking, diligent, committed community worker.

"He never looked for the limelight but he always did the work.

"He cared so much about his community, he's a former mayor of Drogheda. It's just really, really sad."

Senator Ged Nash said: "Oliver was a true gentleman and a top class representative of the people. My heartfelt condolences to Eileen and family."

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick said: "Utterly shocked at the passing of Cllr Oliver Tully.

"My deepest sympathies go out to his friends and family at this very difficult time. He will be sorely missed."

The former secondary school teacher topped the polls in his second and third elections.

Mr Tully was involved in a number of committees, including Louth Meath Education and Training Board where he was Chairman from 2005 to 2011 and 2015 to 2016.
