Community group to sleep outside South Dublin County Council offices in protest at rent hike

A community group will sleep outside South Dublin County Council's Tallaght offices later this month in protest at the raising of rents for pensioners and council tenants.

Last year, the council removed a €10 a week OAP rent allowance and increase all council house rents by €3.

The move sparked outrage with Rise TD Paul Murphy branding it a "heartless attack" on vulnerable people on low incomes.

Dublin South West Housing Action are calling for the hike to be reversed and will stage the sleep out on Friday, January 24.

In a letter to councillors urging them to join the protest, spokesman Patrick Nelis said: "We are urging councillors to reverse the decision on raising the rents on our most vulnerable in South Dublin with old age pensioners and council tenants.

"We deal with some of these families and individuals that struggle with bills and food and this is going to be another struggle to add what these families cant afford.

"We are also urging you to support our sleep out on the 24th outside South Dublin County Council to highlight this and the ongoing housing crisis and lack of urgency from this council and Government to build 100% social and affordable housing on public land."
