Community fundraising proves huge success with worthy causes in Burnside

The Burnside community have recently rallied to help out two local causes.

Thanks to fundraising initiatives organised by Tesco's Community Champions, the Cambuslang Out of School Project received £540 to help activities.

Meanwhile, local team Glenlang Football Club secured £385 of funding to help purchase new kits and equipment.

Members of the community were invited to donate books to the store's community book stand where they could be purchased to raise money for the chosen causes.

The idea was a huge success and even brought cash donations from generous locals who contributed when recycling their old books.

Tesco Burnside Community Champion Kevin Stevenson told Lanarkshire Live : "The people of Burnside have been very kind and a fantastic £340 over four weeks was raised through the books.

"Due to COVID there's been a lot of struggles with fundraising opportunities, but with restrictions now lifting we want to get involved back in the community to support projects that might have been hit with a financial struggle throughout the pandemic."

Money was raised for the Cambuslang Out of School Project through various raffles and prizegiving activities, as well as a bake sale which proved a huge success with locals.

And a huge thanks has been given to generous Burnside residents who have all contributed to the worthy causes picked through Tesco's Community Grants scheme.

This allows locals to nominate a charity or community project that matters in the area where events and fundraising activities can be organised to help out.

Kevin added: "We are doing loads of other things and want to raise awareness as a lot of customers are not aware of the great things we so for the community.

"If people want to apply for community grants can they please contact our store at Tesco Burnside 241 Stonelaw Road, Burnside, G73 3RJ."

He continued: “Myself and my team at Tesco Burnside are delighted to support local community projects.

"From Ann Marie and Amelia supporting The Cambuslang Out Of School Project with a fantastic £540 donation, myself and Caroline helping Rain or Shine Community Shop on Stonelaw Road and St Vincent Du Pauls foodbank with goods and free fruit, to Jason and Kerry raising funds of £340 for Glenlang Football Club EST.

"We just want to do our bit as we know people are struggling and we all believe its very important to give back”

The Community Champions have decided to pick a new project every four weeks to help out as many local causes as possible, with an eye now on the festive period.
