Community 'deeply shaken' after 'calculated' attack on mosque

A community has been left “deeply shaken” after a “calculated” attack on a local mosque.

The incident is said to have taken place at Masjid Yusuf, which is based in Clarkston Community Centre, on Wednesday.

Police confirmed that they were called to a premises on Stamperland Gardens in East Renfrewshire at around 5.40pm after reports of a window being smashed.

An investigation has been launched into the attack.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Extensive enquiries are ongoing after a window was smashed at a premises on Stamperland Gardens, Clarkston, East Renfrewshire, around 5.40pm on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 2636 of September 24."

Following this, the Scottish Association of Mosques (SAM) has said it is “deeply concerned”.

Omar Afzal, of SAM, commented: “This was a calculated and cowardly attack on a place of worship, at a time when innocent worshippers and young students were inside.

“Thankfully, there were no casualties; however, the community has been left deeply shaken.”

The group say it comes after a 15-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted and verbally abused in an “Islamophobic attack” as she walked home from school in another part of the local authority earlier this month.

Afzal added: “This attack is yet another in a series of recent incidents targeting Muslims and mosques in Scotland.

“That it happened in an area such as East Renfrewshire, where communities generally are well integrated and enjoy good relations, is worrying.

“We cannot be complacent anymore and must face up to the reality of a growing hostility and threat towards Muslims, particularly as long as poisonous political rhetoric continues to dominate social media.

“We advise our communities to remain vigilant but not alarmed, and to take sensible precautions.

"We would urge Mosques and community centres to urgently review their security and ensure congregations and service users are kept safe.”

Calls are also being made for the Scottish Government to take action over the reported issue.

Afzal said: “It is long past time that the Scottish Government leads on delivering on the recommendations of the cross-party group’s report into Scotland’s Islamophobia, and provides a roadmap for meaningful change across society.”

The Scottish Government has been contacted for comment.
