Community comes together to create Remembrance day window in Ryton

Norland Hobbies in Ryton created a Remembrance day window with help from the local community.

"The aim of the window is to honour those who have served and currently serve in the Armed Forces and to help bring the community closer together", said shop owner Lisa Mullen.

In terms of the content of the window, several members of the community in Ryton have contributed items related to the topic of Remembrance.

The local knitting group, "Knit n Natter" have created the dolls and poppies that sit in the window.

An RAF uniform has been donated by a recently serving man from Ryton and a photograph and letter from the Royal Family about a local solider that never returned home have been placed in the display.

Completing the collection is a spitfire shell that was found locally on Druridge Bay and some World War 1 items including an officer's hat and a first aid kit.

Lisa 41 went on to say, "Our window is having such a positive impact in our community, people stopping by to admire and reflect. Many are popping in to the shop to compliment us and share their memories. We’d like to share our window with as many people as possible so they too can enjoy it."

"On a personal level, all of my grandparents served and you can see the emotional impact that the window is having on people that walk past. One particular woman, who had a service dog with her got very emotional and thanked us for the window. I want as many people as possible to feel this."
