Briefings for container salvage operation

The project team will explain the logistics of the salvage, risk mitigation and how the waste will be managed.

Of the 81 containers lost in the heavy seas in June 2018, five have already been recovered. Another 16 remain missing.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has awarded a $15 million contract to marine services company Ardent Oceania Pty Ltd for the recovery of the containers.

The company will bring a specialist vessel from Asia for the project, which will involve a team of 25 salvage experts.

The operation, planned for March, will involve the use a remotely operated underwater vehicle and cranes and a custom-built metal basket that will be used to lift the containers from the sea floor.

The basket will encapsulate each container so no content or debris can escape.

The containers and contents will be brought back to the Port of Newcastle.

The information sessions are open to the public and there is no need to register.

The first session will be held on Tuesday 4 February at Newcastle Surf Lifesaving Club between 6:00 - 7.30pm

The second session will be held on Wednesday 5 February Tea Gardens Baptist Church between 10:00 -11.30am

The third session will be held at Wests Nelson Bay on Wednesday 5 February between 6:00 - 7.30pm
