Community aim to raise £10k to replace rusted slide removed by city council

A campaign has been launched to replace a 40-year-old slide which was removed from a park.

The much-loved slide was at Troopers Hill, St George, before removal by Bristol City Council in November due to server rust making it unfit for public use.

Despite strong pleas for the slide to remain, its poor condition was enough for it to be deemed unsafe after a notice was put up by the council notifying the public of its scheduled removal.

Chair of Friends of Troopers Hill, Susan Acton-Campbell, hopes to raise £10,000 through the fundraiser.

She said: "The red slide was greatly loved and now that it's gone, we would really love to bring a new red slide back for the next 40 years for children to enjoy."

She says in 2016, £80,000 was raised to construct a new play area nearby on Troopers Field Hill, but due to limited budget, a twin for the existing red slide could not be included.

And with the council unable to buy a new one, the Friends of Troopers Hill group is keener than ever to bring back the missing piece of the community.

Mrs Acton-Campbell says she recently attended a meeting with local councillors to discuss possible funding.

But having asked for £8,000 to be allocated to the project, the group will have to wait until September for a decision.

She said: “In the meantime there is nothing to stop us encouraging as many people as possible to make a donation.

“My dream result would be for us to actually hit the target ourselves before the Bristol City Councillors of Area 4 Committee come to a decision.”
