Community action group arranges clean-up in Hamilton this weekend

A new community action group is cleaning up the Eddlewood area in Hamilton.

Volunteers will meet every week to collect litter in streets and wooded areas in a bid to improve the area’s image.

The Eddlewood Community Action Group formed to support vulnerable people through lockdown and are now establishing themselves as a community organisation supported by Councillor Josh Wilson and South Lanarkshire Council.

Starting this Sunday (September 13), the team will meet every week at noon outside Eddlewood Football Club’s pavilion and are calling on more locals to get involved to help with their efforts.

Organiser Karen Madden set up the group. She said: “Eddlewood is a great place to live and has some fantastic community minded people within it.

“During lockdown, people from across our area came together to support those that required support most.

“It is so important that we use that momentum to improve our community for the better. That is why I have organised a weekly community clean up and established the action group.

“Whilst support from the community has been welcome, we need more people on board if we are to make a difference. So, if you would like to come along, please join us this Sunday at 12pm outside Eddlewood Football Club.”

Councillor Josh Wilson added: “People from across the area I represent went above and beyond to support their neighbours throughout lockdown.

“Communities that had little organised activity before Covid-19 pulled together like never before. We need to utilise that community spirit and turn those new organisations into constituted groups.

“I am delighted that Karen has set up the Eddlewood Community Action Group and will do everything I can to support the volunteers.

“I’ll also be at this Sunday’s Community Clean-Up and hope to see lots of new volunteers on the day.”

The volunteers have already carried out several community clean-ups over the past month and are looking to expand their reach.

The group are supported by Councillor Josh Wilson and the Community Participation team at South Lanarkshire Council.
