Rising badminton star Anthony McGuire has set his sights on future Commonwealth Games and took a step towards that by taking two titles at the Scottish National Championships last month.
McGuire, 15, from Bothwell, won the mixed doubles with Vibha Raman from Edinburgh and the men’s doubles with Noah Sarvesvaran at Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth.
Mum Pamela says the Holy Cross pupil is dedicated to the sport, and is looking at some pretty big targets.
She said: “He won at under-17 and did well.
“Anthony has four national titles already, so these two are quite sweet and he’s over the moon.
“He won in mixed doubles with Vibha Raman and men’s doubles with Noah Sarvesvaran.
“He has been playing since he was about seven, and he’s still playing and training.
“Anthony is doing really well, we’re really pleased for him.
“He has his eye on Commonwealth and sometimes talks Olympics as well, so he’s definitely focused on taking it as far as he can.
“He’s training every day, really, and for a few hours a day before he went back to school, and now trying to balance the academic side of it.
“He’s training in Glasgow and at David Lloyd with Craig Goddard, and he is giving him a lot of help.”
