Commonwealth Games heartbreak for Jodey Hughes as she reacts to "biggest bomb of my life"

Jodey Hughes suffered Commonwealth Games heartbreak as four years of hard work went out the window in a matter of seconds.

The 39-year-old weightlifter from Strathaven failed to reach the clean and jerk medal rounds on Saturday, having been unable to register a snatch lift in three attempts at the NEC in Birmingham.

It wasn’t clear if an injury was part of the issue or it was nerves, but the civil servant didn’t get close to lifting her 71kg opening weight and was left crestfallen as her medal dream disappeared in a flash in front of a 100-strong support from family and friends in the arena.

Gutted Jodey posted on her Instagram: “It was a tough day at the office. I’m proud to have went there and given it my all.

“I really wanted the opportunity to clean and jerk because I would’ve been out there in the mix. But that’s sport for you.

“There is blood, sweat and tears in this sport. The highs are indescribably amazing but you have the lows and this one is going to sting for a while.

“But I’m incredibly proud to have been out there representing Scotland and I couldn’t have asked for a better crowd.”

She added: “I still haven’t fully processed what happened, it was all so quick.

“Despite having the biggest bomb of my life, everyone made me feel like a winner and gave me one of the best nights ever.

"I know what happened doesn’t define me or reflect my efforts – but what happens next does.

“I’m not sure yet what’s next but I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to share this incredible experience with you. I’ll read your messages in the next while.

“I’m just not ready yet.”
