Commonwealth Games delegate charged with sexual assault

A Commonwealth Games delegate from Mauritius has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman on the Gold Coast last week.

The Queensland Police Service said the 52-year-old Mauritian man was accused of assaulting a 26-year-old woman in Southport on March 29.

He was arrested in the Games athletes' village, taken to the Southport watch house and then granted bail.

The man is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on April 17.

Earlier this week when assault allegations first surfaced, the delegate stepped down from his position with the Mauritian team.

He strongly denied the allegations at that time, saying they were "unfounded, unwarranted, false and malicious".
