Commonwealth flag call for Scotland ruled out at Holyrood

MSPs rejected a campaign to fly the Commonwealth flag on Scottish Government buildings after Brexit.

A petition was sent to parliament complaining the blue-and-gold EU flag is no longer valid and should be replaced.

It follows a row earlier this year after the Record revealed the SNP's plan to keep the distinctive European symbol flying year round outside the Holyrood building in Edinburgh.

The Commonwealth scheme comes one day after former British colony Barbados took another step to removing the Queen as head of state and becoming a full republic.

The Scottish Government said: "Scottish Ministers are showing their commitment to the values of the EU and solidarity with the 230,000 EU nationals who live and work in Scotland.

"There are, therefore no plans to replace the routine flying of the EU Flag with the Commonwealth Flag on Scottish Government buildings."

The call reached Holyrood's petitions committee on Thursday and was promptly turned down.

Convener Johann Lamont said the flag is already flown once a year.

"There's a consensus that regardless of people's individual views on flying flags at any particular time, the Scottish Government has made t very clear there are no plans to do this," she said.
