West Lothian raised the Commonwealth Flag outside West Lothian Civic Centre to mark Commonwealth Day.

The annual event sees member countries of the Commonwealth celebrate their links with one another.

The event was attended by locals and council employees and included speeches delivered by the Lord-Lieutenant for West Lothian, Ms Moira Niven MBE and Provost Tom Kerr. Children from local primary schools including St Ninian’s, St John Ogilvie, Torphichen and Williamston also in attendance waving flags from a number of Commonwealth countries.

The Commonwealth Flag was raised at 9.30am on March 9 and was followed by two songs performed by children from Howden St Andrew’s Primary School Choir.

Lord-Lieutenant for West Lothian, Moira Niven MBE, said: “Commonwealth Day provides a yearly reminder of our links to nations across the Commonwealth. It also presents a fantastic opportunity for us all to learn more about the history of Commonwealth and to show that the Commonwealth has a place in our hearts.”

Provost Tom Kerr said: “Commonwealth Day is always a great occasion for us all to promote shared Commonwealth values of peace, democracy, equality and diversity.

“A huge thank you to everyone who attended and special thanks to the choir from Howden St Andrew’s choir for their excellent performance to bring the event to a close.”
