The first Common Test for University Admissions was held nationwide on Saturday with 11 prefectures under a coronavirus-related state of emergency. Examinees wearing masks took part in the new test at venues with disinfection and ventilation measures in place.

The common test, which has the same multiple-choice format as the National Center University Entrance Examination it has replaced, includes questions focused on thinking skills and decision making.

According to the National Center for University Entrance Examinations, there were 535,245 applicants for the new test, 22,454 fewer than the number of applicants for last year's test.

Multiple dates have been set out of consideration for students who were behind in their studies due to prolonged pandemic-related school closures.

Infection measures include requiring examinees to wear masks and refrain from talking at lunchtime.
