Common household plant could tackle mould and dust in your home, according to NASA

There are still months on winter left to go, with the cold weather sadly here to stay a little while longer yet.

And because of this, it's a battle for many people to choose between turning on the heating and staying warm or keeping the heater off during the cost of living crisis. And as a result, issues such as condensation and mould can become a real problem.

If you are struggling to keep mould at bay, there is one common household plant which you should buy the next time you're out. According to NASA, the plant could also help remove dust and toxins from the air.

And in an added benefit, according to the Mirror, it's not only visually appealing but it's low maintenance too. The plant is the Peace Lily and can vary in cost depending on where you get it from.

There are many hidden toxins in the air we breathe such as Trichloroethylene, which is found in paint strippers and varnishes, formaldehyde found in synthetic fabrics, Benzene found in plastics and tobacco smoke, Xylene found in rubber and leather, and ammonia found in window cleaners and fertilisers - and they're not good for us.

Looking into which plants can help to purify the surrounding air, Dr. B. C. Wolverton led a study in 1989 for NASA revealing which plants are the best option.

The findings explain that a Peace Lily helps by taking in moisture from the air through its leaves. And what's better, the plant doesn't need direct sunlight to thrive meaning it is useful in battling mould spores in humid rooms.

However, before you buy the plant, it's crucial to note that they are extremely toxic to both cats and dogs.

You can buy a Peace Lily from B&Q for just £7 here.
