Committal hearing begins in case of alleged murders of Victorian campers Carol Clay and Russell Hill

A committal hearing into the alleged murders of two campers in the Victorian high country has heard a maintenance worker saw a "grumpy" older driver in the remote Wonnangatta Valley in the lead-up to their disappearance.

Russell Hill and Carol Clay were reported missing from that location in March 2020. Their campsite was later found burnt out.

In 2021, police charged then-Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn with the murder of both Ms Clay and Mr Hill.

The committal hearing heard he planned to plead not guilty to those charges.

Weed sprayer Robert Williams told the Melbourne Magistrates' Court he saw a white LandCruiser speed past him with a "grumpy" looking person driving, on March 20.

He said he later recognised that person and the vehicle when he saw a missing person report in the media about Mr Hill and Ms Clay.

Mr Williams also described seeing a drone flying over him and surrounding campsites on the evening of March 20, 2020.

"When I waved to it, he circled around a bit," he said.

The witness said he thought it was rude to fly over campsites.

"People don't like them, going there to have a peaceful camp and then people are flying a drone over you," he said.

He was the third witness to give evidence at the committal hearing, which was designed to test whether there was enough evidence for the case against Mr Lynn to proceed to trial.

Prosecutors are yet to outline a summary of the allegations they will make against Mr Lynn.

He sat in the courtroom in a dark suit and checked shirt, closely listening to the witnesses and making notes.

Campers tell court they saw a couple in the area

Earlier in the hearing, two campers described seeing an elderly couple in a white ute travelling through the Wonnangatta Valley on March 19, 2020.

Speaking through a Serbian translator, Damir Javor said he had tried to overtake the white ute carrying an older man and woman, before it pulled into a campsite where there was already another car.

"One of the vehicles was a blue Nissan Patrol … other one was a white ute of a newer generation, I couldn't see the brand," he said.

He told the court there was a man leaning up against the blue vehicle but he did not get a close look at him.

His friend, Goran Miljkovic, told the court he also saw the white ute pull into the campsite, close to the other car.

Mr Miljkovic told the court it was common to hear gunshots during the night in the area and he thought he heard one gunshot just before dawn on March 20.

He said later that day he saw two people walking back from a historic graveyard area, who he thought might have been the elderly couple he had seen in the white ute the day before.

The committal hearing is expected to continue for a number of days.
