Commercial flights return to Carlisle Airport with fares to London, Dublin and Belfast from £39.99

The first commercial passenger flight to leave Carlisle Airport in more than 25 years will take off today.

Scottish airline Loganair is launching services from Stobart Group's Carlisle Lake District Airport to London Southend, Belfast City and Dublin.

The first flight, to Dublin Airport, will take off on Thursday following a blessing from the Archdeacon of Carlisle, the Ven Lee Townend.

Kate Willard, director of partnership development at the Stobart Group, said: "It's going to be an extraordinary day for the airport and for the city of Carlisle."

The airport is on the A689, six miles from Carlisle City Centre, five miles from the A69 road linking Newcastle to Carlisle and 18 miles from Haltwhistle in Northumberland. A free minibus connects the terminal with Carlisle railway station.

Parking is available at the airport too.

It is hoped the airport will bring new tourists to the Lake District and open up travel opportunities for people in the Cumbria area.

Fares start from £39.99 to Belfast, £44.99 to Dublin and £44.99 to London Southend.

Ms Willard said the launch was of "huge significance" for the Northern Powerhouse as it would connect regions and economies.

She added: "Airports are symbols of confidence and this shows Cumbria is open for business."

Flights were initially set to return to the airport in June 2018, but an air traffic control staff shortage led to a year-long delay.

Ms Willard said: "It was unbelievably disappointing for everybody, particularly for the team who worked so hard.

"We have moved forward and we have a full cohort of air traffic control staff here ready."

Loganair will use 33-seater Saab 340B aircraft to operate the flights, with nine return services on weekdays and five at weekends.

The site is a former RAF airfield and its last commercial passenger flight was in 1993.
