Commentators release World Cup anthem

England football fans
Under the instruction of manager Fabio Capello, there will be no official England football song year, so the commentators stepped in to provide a song for the fans.

The Lightning Seeds and Baddiel and Skinner, New Order and John Barnes Ant and Dec... musicians wishing to urge on the England football team with song have a lot to live up to.

But at least Commentators United, performers of the latest track encouraging "our boys," can claim an almost unrivalled knowledge of the beautiful game – as the group's name suggests, it is made up of football commentators.

'Let's hear it England', available to download from today, features some of English football's most prominent voices, including Clive Tyldesley, Guy Mowbray and Peter Drury, and, according to publicity material, is "destined to become this summer's England anthem for the World Cup".

Under the instruction of manager Fabio Capello, there will be no official England football song year, so perhaps the terraces/all seater stadiums could yet be ringing out to the chorus of "Let's hear it England, a-way-oh-way-oh, let's hear it England, a-way-oh-way-oh".

Proceeds from the song, which also features the Cotswold Male Voice Choir, will go to the Prince's Trust charity, but Commentators United are not alone in thinking they can plug the gap left by the lack of an official England football track.

Indeed, TalkSport has even launched a competiton to find a World Cup anthem, selected by listeners, with the winner to be announced in May.

Following the maxims that a successful football song must be a) uplifing and b) have a title that includes the words 'home,' 'world' or a vaguely encouraging phrase, the leading contenders so far include Faithless – Take Me Home, The Courteeners – Take Over The World and Hannah – I Believe In You.

Elsewhere, notorious football fan/opportunist Chico has also been threatening to release a track in the run up to the World Cup.

The X factor finalist, backed by Chris Moyles and a Facebook campaign, is set to release 'It's England Time' in early June, although it's hard to see supporters chanting lyrics such as "We get so delirious, we take football serious," in the pubs.
