Commentator's remarkable call as eight horses cross the line together in crazy race

A commentator called the winner of an extraordinary race which saw eight horses cross the line together.

Despite the action-packed finish to the Betway Insider Handicap, Martin Harris predicted Diamond Jill (4-1) had snatched the spoils.

His eye was drawn to the horse, carrying the purple and pink colours, finishing fast from off the pace.

At the furlong pole, the runners were spread right across the track, in what looked a nightmare scenario for the race caller.

But somehow he nominated Richard Kingscote's mount for first place.

"It's wide open," Harris said.

"Diamond Jill is bursting through on the inside, it's going to be a six or seven way photo. Diamond Jill might have snatched it.

"Very tight indeed."

The photo finish confirmed the filly had won by a nose from Rania (13-2), with a neck back to Al Gaiya in third.

The fourth, fifth and sixth placed horses each took their positions by a nose, with a head back to Broken Rifle in seventh. Born To Sire was a short-head behind that rival.

Fellow commentator Mike Cattermole, on presenting duty for Sky Sports Racing, said: "I don't think I've ever seen a tighter finish."

ITV Racing's Oli Bell posted a picture of it on his Twitter account, equally bemused by the closing stages.

"How's this for a finish!!?" he asked his followers.

Racing fans had their say on the unusual race, in which Diamond Jill overcame some traffic problems to take the £2,700 first prize.

"The handicapper can sleep well tonight," one said on the social media platform.

Another tweeted: "Handicapper earning his Christmas bonus."

And a third person added: "Wooow........that's one for the judge."

Another of the very close races on an action-packed Boxing Day programme came at the highest level in Ireland.

Master McShee led in the final stride to take the Grade 1 BoyleSports Faugheen Novice Chase at Limerick.

Backers of Farouk D'alene thought the 11-10 favourite had done enough, but the 10-1 shot gained the verdict with his late lunge.

Trainer Paddy Corkery and jockey Ian Power celebrated their biggest ever win.

"The horse is an absolute gentleman to his fingertips and is a beautiful horse to have anything to do with," Corkery said.

“A glass of wine is the short-term plan, and a few pints of Guinness if I can get them!”
