Commentator hurls racist insults at school team for kneeling during National Anthem

An investigation is underway after an announcer made sickening racist comments when a high school basketball team knelt during the US National Anthem.

The shocking diatribe happened in Oklahoma, when online viewers were subjected to a stream of disgusting racist remarks.

When members of the Norman High School girls' team took a knee, the announcer was heard saying: "They're kneeling? F****** n******.

"I hope Norman gets their a** kicked."

He then continued: "F*** them. I hope they lose."

The clip was shared on social media, with one user writing: "This is why they kneel."

The game was being livestreamed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Network.

In a statement the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) said it was aware of "very offensive, inappropriate comments" and added: "While we are currently investigating the incident, this crew will not be doing any more games for the remainder of our championships."

The NFHS said it was "sickened" by the comments.

In a statement the body said: "The thoughts expressed in no way represent the NFHS Network and we are outraged that they found their way into our production.

"We are aggressively investigating the incident and have immediately cut ties with the third-party production crew that was involved."

Norman Mayor Breea Clark wrote on Twitter that she was "absolutely disgusted" after footage was shared.

She posted: "I am livid and absolutely disgusted about the racist and hateful comments directed towards the young women on the Norman High School basketball team by a game announcer in the live broadcast of last night’s game.

"These young athletes were simply expressing themselves as hundreds of professional athletes around the nation have done, and no one, let alone a child, deserves to experience this kind of racist and toxic behavior.

"The announcer could’ve stopped with declaring he hoped our team would lose, but instead he went further and decided to use profanity and racist slurs about our children."
