Commanders to interview Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy on Thursday

Becoming a two-time Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator typically means you’d be a hot head-coaching candidate, but that’s not the case for Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Instead, it’s been the two losing Super Bowl coordinators who get head-coaching jobs in this cycle.

And what’s left for Bieniemy?

According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Bieniemy will interview with the Washington Commanders for their vacant offensive coordinator position on Thursday. He’ll celebrate at the parade with the team on Wednesday and turn his preparation for the interview. The only reason this interview for a lateral move can even happen is that Bieniemy’s contract with Kansas City has expired.

Bieniemy is considered a top candidate for the Ron Rivera-coached Washington team. It’s an enticing job for Bieniemy because he’d get an opportunity to be the sole person in charge of coordinating the offense and offensive play-calling.

The perception surrounding Bieniemy’s lack of head-coaching opportunities is that NFL ownership simply believes the offense in Kansas City is a product of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. They’re sure to be a significant part of the offensive success, but to boil down Bieniemy’s role as a guy who is just along for the ride is absurd and flat-out wrong. His resume and reputation in the Chiefs’ organization speak for themselves and he shouldn’t feel the need to have to go and prove himself elsewhere to receive a deserved promotion.
