Commanders season opener in 2 days: Washington’s best No. 2

Commanders Wire continues a countdown to Washington’s season opener for 2023 in 2 days. Who was the team’s best player wearing No. 2?

Washington receiver Dyami Brown is currently No. 2, while the others who’ve worn No. 2 in franchise history were those who, rather than catch the ball, kicked/punted the ball. In his two seasons (2021-22), Brown has collected 17 receptions, including a 75-yard touchdown against the Titans in 2022.

Kelly Goodburn (1990-93), after spending four seasons in Kansas City, came to Washington, kicking four seasons for the Burgundy and Gold. Goodburn was the punter for the 1991 Super Bowl championship team.

Jack Weil punted during the 1987 strike season. Ralph Mojsiejenko punted for the Burgundy and Gold in the 1989 and 1990 seasons, and Andy Groom punted two games in 2005.

Eddie Murray has the distinction of being the 1995 kicker for 16 games, then the Vikings in 1997, the Cowboys in 1999 and then once again the Redskins in 2000 for six games, at the age of 44.

When most fans think of the 2012 season, they automatically think of Robert Griffin and Alfred Morris. They both did have big seasons, the best of their careers. But the name most often overlooked that was crucial to the winning of close games was kicker Kai Forbath. Forbath began his career, coming to Washington, replacing Billy Cundiff. He then proceeded to connect on his first 17 field goal attempts to start a career, an NFL record. Forbath finished the season making 17 of 18 field goal attempts and 33 of 34 extra point attempts. He led the NFL in field goal percentage at 94.4% made.

In his four Washington seasons, Forbath connected on 60 of 69 field goals and 91 of 93 extra-point attempts.

For these reasons, Forbath is our choice as the best in franchise history to wear No. 2.
