Commanders named a potential landing spot for top free-agent linebacker

NFL free agency is only one week away, and chaos still surrounds the Washington Commanders and their current ownership situation. While Washington isn’t expected to be a major player for some of the top names on the free-agent market, the Commanders could perhaps land one top free agent.

Head coach Ron Rivera ruled Washington out in a possible pursuit of a veteran quarterback. While that makes sense, it’s different than pursuing other positions.

One position the Commanders have failed to find a long-term answer at is linebacker. Yes, Washington selected Jamin Davis in the first round in 2021, but he remains a work in progress. Davis struggled as a rookie but did take a big step forward in 2022.

Also, Cole Holcomb is a free agent after missing the second half of last season with a foot injury. Holcomb could return on a one-year deal. However, what if the Commanders want an upgrade?

Tremaine Edmunds of the Buffalo Bills is the top off-ball linebacker in free agency. And CBS Sports recently named Edmunds as a potential fit for the Commanders in free agency:

Landing spots: Commanders, Broncos, Texans

Edmunds is a player who can make some nice money for himself on the open market this offseason. The Commanders have been searching for a true middle linebacker for a couple years now, and instead of moving Cole Holcomb and Jamin Davis around, how about Ron Rivera goes out and signs a proven MLB? The same goes for the Broncos, who have one of the best defenses in the NFL. Alex Singleton and Josey Jewell were tackling monsters, but Edmunds would be an immediate upgrade. Additionally, the Texans could be looking for a new defensive leader as this team embarks on a rebuild. I bet DeMeco Ryans would love having Edmunds in the middle of his defense.

Is Edmunds likely for the Commanders? Probably not. But he’d represent an upgrade for Washington’s defense, potentially taking the unit to another level in 2023.
