The Jacksonville Jaguars had a lot of competition to claim offensive lineman Wes Martin off waivers on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. He reported that the Washington Commanders and the Los Angeles Chargers attempted to claim him, too, but the Jaguars had the highest priority.
The New York Giants originally waived Martin on Tuesday. He spent one season with the Giants where he played in seven games and started one. He was a former fourth-round draft pick of Washington out of Indiana who tried to get him back on Wednesday.
Martin played his first two seasons with the Commanders playing in 25 games while making 10 starts. With the Hoosiers, he played in 50 games while starting 43. He was a captain for Indiana in 2017 and 2018.
Martin is an excellent pickup for the Jaguars and should be a solid depth piece for head coach Doug Pederson’s team this season. It’s quite a luxury to have a guard on the bench who has a good amount of starting experience.
Martin will now be joining one of his former coaches, Phil Rauscher, who was an assistant and interim offensive line coach with the Commanders from 2018-19. Rauscher was brought onto the Jags’ staff as the offensive line coach this year when Doug Pederson named his staff back in February.
