Comet Neowise Ireland: Exact time and place to see 'comet of the century' each night this week

Droves of people have been sharing their pictures of the Neowise comet above Ireland in recent weeks.

The "comet of the century" has been visible over the country for most of July and will be closest to Earth later this week.

It is a rare comet in the sense it can be seen with the naked eye although any apparatus would help in seeing it.

The Neowise fireball was discovered earlier this year and won't be seen again for 6,800 years once it passes in the next few weeks.

Here's all the advice you need on seeing the comet from those who already have and experts;

Neowise sightings so far in Ireland

The comet has been seen many times already this month with stargazers taking to social media to share their pictures.

Met Eireann meteorologist Kieran Commins spotted the comet over Kildare on Sunday night and snapped some amazing photos.

Others reported seeing it over Galway, Cork and many other parts of Ireland with the meteorite so bright and noticeable.

Where to look and what time

Firstly you need to try and find somewhere where you have an unobstructed view of the horizon, and just after sunset in the Northwest sky.

It will be visible just after sunset so around 8pm and onwards you should be able to get a glimpse if you have clear skies.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "For tonight, Monday July 20th, there will be mostly cloud free skies for many across Ireland, increasing your chances of seeing the #cometNEOWISE. However, thicker cloud will push into western parts towards dawn tomorrow. See animation below for more info."

It is expected to reach its closest point to Earth next Thursday, July 23.
