Comedy preview: John Pinette, Edinburgh

John Pinette is the latest in a long line of somewhat overweight, funny Americans that include the likes of Fatty Arbuckle, John Belushi, John Candy and Chris Farley to name but a few. The comedy fat man on the circuit is as long serving as the custard pie in the face, and as a staple it ain't broke, so there's no imminent need to fix it. Pinette's a charismatic performer currently making his debut at the Edinburgh festival, and his sets focus on his weight issues and eating habits, subjects which could be pedestrian in the hands of a lesser comic. However, with Pinette's squeaky voice, high energy and stagecraft they are anything but, and an hour in his company will be one of the funniest at the Fringe.
