The actor, who plays newspaper photographer Lenny in Ricky Gervais' After Life, tweeted that Sean was the reason he met legendary musician Paul McCartney.

The post said: "I met Paul McCartney because of Sean Lock, just after meeting Sean himself.

"He shouted “Oi Paul!” across Soho Sq, Paul waved back, came over and chatted for half an hour.

"When he left I said “How do you know him?” Sean said “I don’t, but he knows he’s Paul McCartney doesn’t he?”

And fans on Twitter have reacted in hysterics about how the tale perfectly sums up the 'comic genius.'

Clare said: "Love that story, loving all the stories about him, obviously a genuinely great guy and just naturally funny. So sorry for your loss."

Robert added: "Fabulous story and I can hear him saying that lol. RIP."

Jim commented: "Wonderful story, encapsulating a comic genius. #RIPSeanLock"

The story also received a response from author Jane Fallon who said: "I love this."
