It added "Our thoughts are with his friends and family. The world is a poorer place without him."

Phil was due to appear in a Robin Hood panto at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham in December.

As well as stand up comedy and panto performances, Phil was also a talented magician and entertained on cruise ships.

He also received the Operational Service Medal for his time spent entertaining the troops in Afghanistan.

Celebrity friends have also taken to Twitter to share their condolences.

Jason Manford said: "Was so sorry to learn of the death of the always very funny and charming Phil Butler.

"Had many memorable gigs with him on the circuit including a mad weekend of shows at BCM Square in Magaluf!"

Fellow comedian Shaparak Khorsandi posted: "Rest in peace Phil. Another one of us gone too soon. For 20 years I’ve looked at the running order when I’ve got to a club and gone ‘oh fab! Phil Butler’s on’. Such a laugh on the road.

She added: "In Dubai I asked about his UFO tattoo and loved the way he told The Story. A class act."

Britain's Got Talent semi-finalist, John Archer, wrote: "Just heard that we have lost the lovely Phil Butler.

"So sad, a genuine lover of being on stage. So tonight, my bit of stage nonsense is dedicated to him."
