Comedian John Bishop to host charity fundraiser for fellow Liverpool fan Sean Cox

Top comedian John Bishop will host a charity fundraiser for Sean Cox in Liverpool next year.

The popular stand-up met the dad of three during the Reds’ 3-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

It was the first time the Irishman returned to Anfield since being seriously injured in an attack by Roma fans outside the ground in April last year.

Bishop has already sold out a star-studded comedy show in Dublin for The Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust in January and said he is hoping to announce a gig in his home city soon.

He tweeted: “Honour to meet Sean Cox and his family. The Dublin fund raiser gig sold out in 15 minutes and I thank everyone for their support.

“We are finalising details for a Liverpool gig which I hope to announce very shortly. Some things are more important than football.”

A host of stars will join Bishop at Dublin’s 3Arena on January 10 including Michael McIntyre, Tommy Tiernan, Dara O Briain, Deirdre O’Kane, Joanne McNally, Jason Byrne and Des Bishop.

Sean and his family were guests of Liverpool at Sunday’s match, 18 months after he was assaulted before a Champions League semi-final.

Images of him were shown on the big screen during the game and sparked a rousing ovation from both sets of fans.

And meeting Sean at the match made Liverpool legend Ian Rush’s day.

The club’s leading goalscorer also posed for a photo with the man from Dunboyne, Co Meath.

The Wales star said: “The highlight for me yesterday was having Sean Cox with us at Anfield! This is what @LFC @LFCFoundation Is all about! Y. N. W. A.”

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp has promised Sean a season ticket for Anfield if he moves to Liverpool.

Speaking after the game, the Reds boss said: “It was special, it was nice. His wife and son were there as well, it was a wonderful day for them as well. It’s what we wanted.

“I can say already that if he moves to Liverpool then he gets a season ticket, 100 per cent!

“It was for all the boys really important news when we heard he was able to come to the stadium and watch a football game. I saw him and he could enjoy the game. So, all good.”
