Comedian jailed for horrific abuse of two women launches appeal on sentence

A Coatbridge comedian jailed for abusing two women has launched an appeal against his sentence.

Award-winning stand-up John David McDade, who goes by the stage name JD Brown, was found guilty last month of a string of offences against his two victims.

Appearing at Airdrie Sheriff Court on April 5, McDade, 37, of Coatbridge, was jailed for four years and three months.

He was also ordered not to contact his victims for 20 years. Now McDade has launched a bid against his sentence.

Last week, one of the women said: “He needs to face up to what he has done. He needs to serve his time and punishment for what he has put everyone through.”

McDade abducted the 39-year-old, locked her in his home and forced her to stay overnight.

During one attack, he seized her by the throat and held her down, restricting her breathing.

The abuse against the woman took place between December 2011 and January 2014.

McDade was also found guilty of a three-year campaign of abuse against a 29-year-old female.

Between April 2015 and August 2018, he threw a hot drink in her face, pinned her to the floor and struck her on her head and body to her severe injury.

McDade was also found guilty of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner towards the woman between September 2014 and August 2016.

Sentencing him, Sheriff Derek O’Carroll told McDade: “You pose a serious danger to any woman who is unlucky enough to be entrapped in your manipulative and controlling snares.”
