A 65-year-old former player and manager made a storming comeback with an 11-minute hat-trick in a surprise substitute performance. Tomi Morgan, a coach at Penparcau FC, was called into action in the second half of a cup game against Welshpool reserves because of a lack of players.
Penparcau, who play in the Central Wales Southern Division, were already 6-0 up when Morgan, the only substitute for his side, had to enter the fray because of an injury. He said: "We were on top and creating chances and fortunately a few dropped for me in the six-yard box and I managed to put them away.
“It was a bit of a surprise for the lads and they enjoyed it because I’ve been telling them for years what a prolific goalscorer I was. But half of them weren’t born when I was in my prime.”
Morgan had a lengthy spell as a player and manager, for teams including Aberystwyth, Porthmadog and Camarthen Town. He also managed Welshpool for a spell.
His impressive performance attracted praise from the clubs fans on social media, with one person commenting: “Respect for what surely must be a record for oldest scorer of a hat-trick and just seen him walking in Penparcau and no sign of stiffness! Legend!”
His feat at a relatively advanced age should perhaps have come as no surprise. Morgan also holds the record of being the oldest player in the JD Cymru Premier, when he played for Welshpool in 2010 at the age of 53.
