Combs past prime seen off in Japan shrine ceremony

A priest prays over used combs at Kushida Shrine in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka, on Tuesday, as part of a memorial service for old combs that are no longer used. The ceremony took place on the day because Sept. 4 is regarded as the day of combs, as nine and four can be read "kushi" in Japanese -- just like the word for "comb." About 420 past-their-prime combs, such as those with broken teeth, that had been used at beauty salons and other places, were offered during the annual event, which started in 1996.
