Combine breadcrumbs indicate Dolphins rebuild begins in the trenches

One of the most fascinating things surrounding roster building philosophies at the NFL level is that there are multiple ways to get the job done. Do you want to target your quarterback first and then add talent around him (like the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles). Or you can build up the rest of the roster and then find your signal caller last (like the Seattle Seahawks).

From the sounds of things in Indianapolis, the Dolphins are riding both sides of that fence…for now.

The reports out of Indianapolis bring news that the Miami Dolphins have been meeting with numerous quarterback prospects from the 2019 NFL Draft. Of course they are.

But the team has also met with a plethora of offensive and defensive linemen. Names like Jachai Polite, Dexter Lawrence, Charles Omenihu, Ed Oliver and others said today that they’d all met with the Dolphins. Florida offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor stated he’d met with the team yesterday.

Again, consider the source of inspiration. The Dolphins are adopting several philosophies of team building from “that team up north”. And that may very well include building a roster from the inside out. Coach Belichick’s teams have been typically very stout up the middle.

Should we be worried, considering that Patriots transplants rarely ever find success outside of Foxboro? Not necessarily. There should be skepticism, but the breadcrumbs we’re reading to this point in the off-season suggest that this will be another borrowed philosophy that can work, but is no guarantee.
