Coma patient caused "complete mayhem" at Ayr Hospital after going berserk

Five police officers were forced to restrain a recovering coma patient after he went berserk in Ayr hospital.

Sean Power caused “complete mayhem” in a treatment room after he downed a cocktail of drink and prescription drugs.

And his “appalling” behaviour caused eight hours of disruption for hospital staff.

Power, aged 32, appeared from custody for sentencing at Ayr Sheriff Court last Wednesday.

At an earlier hearing he admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear and alarm and that he did act in an aggressive manner, utter threats of violence, struggle with police officers and repeatedly spit.

The offences took place on August 9 this year at Craig Tara Holiday Park, Dunure Road, Ayr, and in the course of a journey from there to Ayr Hospital.

Power further admitted breaching bail conditions, imposed on May 29 this year at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

The court was told how Power was enjoying a break at Craig Tara to celebrate his return to health after he awoke from a three-month coma.

But he downed a combination of Valium and alcohol that sent him off the rails- and into the hands of the law.

Sheriff Mactaggart said to Power: “Your behaviour at Craig Tara beggars belief but your behaviour in hospital was nothing short of appalling.

“You caused complete mayhem and wasted resources that are for sick people.

“You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself.

“I am stopping short of a custodial sentence but I am putting in place a robust community payback order.”

Power, of Burnside Road, Gorebridge, Edinburgh, was sentenced to two years supervision and 180 hours of unpaid work in the community to be completed within the next 12 months as a direct alternative to custody.
