Columbus police come under fire Tuesday morning

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police are trying to determine who opened fire on their officers early Tuesday morning, the second time officers have come under fire in nine days.

No police personnel were injured in either incident.

Police said the most recent incident occurred at 3:05 a.m. Tuesday when officers were parked and completing a report at the entrance to the First Church of God. Several shots rang out to the south of their location, and the marquee sign for the church was struck, police said in a news release.

Officers responded to the area where the gunfire originated, near Berwick Grove Apartments, and discovered several spent shell casings.

Tuesday's early morning gunfire follows a similar incident that occurred Dec. 22, when officers responding to a report of shots fired on the Northeast Side suddenly came under fire.

In that case, one officer returned fire, and the suspect fled.
